The CranioSacral system plays a vital role in maintaining the environment in which our central nervous system functions. It consists of the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord as well as the attached bones. CranioSacral therapy (CST) therpasists work with this system to feel and assess the flow of CranioSacral fluid and to manipulate the skull bones and sacrum to relieve pain and loss of function. It is a gentle, light-touch approach to bodywork that enhances the body’s natural ability to heal. It is useful as both a primary treatment modality as well as a complementary treatment to massage, chiropractic and other holistic therapies. CST was invented by osteopath, William G. Sutherland in the 1930s and was further developed by another osteopath, John Upledger, the leading proponent of CST today. CST has been shown to alleviate a wide range of conditions, including migraine headaches, chronic fatigue, motor-coordination impairments, chronic neck and back pain, central nervous system disorders, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), stress and tension-related problems. Due to its effectiveness, many people include CST as a component in their personal wellness programs. They report having more energy, sleeping better and being sick less often.
